1ST ED., VOL. 3

In a year marked by challenges, Western Protective Solutions has achieved remarkable milestones. Despite industries changing and a dynamic market, we've demonstrated exceptional adaptability to delivering solutions that protect individuals in the worst conditions.

This edition of the Western Protective Solutions Compass provides an overview of our key achievements, industry insights, and challenges overcome in the third quarter. We're excited to showcase successful training initiatives to product launches and strategic partnerships. Together, our brands work to create a safer world. Here's what we've done this quarter.

Western Shelter: Innovation and Resilience in Emergency Response

Quarterly Highlights

Western Shelter is proud to announce the successful completion of training for the Brazil Field Hospital project. We delivered a total of 24 shelters with vestibule connections and HVAC systems. The training, conducted in August, involved two Western Shelter representatives and approximately 40 trainees. The hands-on experience was key, with five shelters assembled as demonstrations before trainees tackled the remaining units. This training ensures the efficient deployment of the shelters, providing critical support for emergency healthcare needs.

Industry and Market Insights

The emergency preparedness landscape is evolving positively. After a period of concentrated funding on migrant and unhoused populations, conversations with emergency managers indicate a renewed emphasis on traditional emergency readiness projects, including flood, earthquake, and fire mitigation. This encouraging trend signifies a growing acknowledgment of the importance of comprehensive emergency planning for all types of threats. Western Shelter is committed to supporting these efforts.

Additionally, our participation in the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) conference provided a valuable opportunity to showcase our solutions. We were able to prominently display the ECS-90, a versatile and durable shelter system designed to support critical missions in a variety of environments. The ECS-90's ability to quickly deploy and configure for different purposes made it a standout exhibit, attracting significant interest from attendees.

Challenges Overcome

Our team faced a significant challenge during a particularly intense fire season. Despite the strain on our inventory and production capacity, we were able to successfully meet the urgent needs of our customers fighting wildfires. Through strategic planning and efficient operations, we demonstrated our unwavering commitment to providing essential supplies during critical times. This experience has strengthened our resolve to be a reliable partner in supporting communities impacted by natural disasters.

CrewBoss: Building a Safer Future

Quarterly Highlights

CrewBoss is excited to announce a key partnership milestone. Our contract manufacturer is now shipping CrewBoss products regularly, with production velocity steadily increasing on dedicated lines. This ensures a reliable supply of our firefighter Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) solutions.

Industry and Market Insights

The safety of our nation's firefighters remains a top priority. We're closely following the recent legislation in Massachusetts proposing a ban on PFAS chemicals in firefighter gear. While the bill's implementation awaits further developments, it may pave the way for similar regulations.

Challenges Overcome

To proactively prevent errors and expedite production, the New Product Development team developed pre-made Turnout samples for department orders across the U.S. These samples serve as visual references for production teams, ensuring that each order is accurately assembled and customized to meet the specific needs of the department. This approach has significantly improved our accuracy and streamlined the production process, resulting in faster turnaround times and higher customer satisfaction.

Air Rover: Leading the Way in Eco-Friendly Climate Control

Quarterly Highlights

Air Rover is excited to announce our new 5-ton Environmental Control Unit (ECU) utilizing the eco-friendly R-513-A refrigerant. This product delivers the reliable climate control you expect from Air Rover while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The refrigerant is better for the environment primarily due to its significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP). GWP is a measure of how much a greenhouse gas contributes to climate change compared to an equal mass of carbon dioxide.

Industry and Market Insights

The climate control industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards environmentally responsible solutions. We're proud to be at the forefront of this movement with the introduction of our R-513-A-based ECU. As the HFC refrigerant phaseout continues, we anticipate a rise in eco-friendly refrigerants like R-513-A and R-454b. This shift benefits our planet and ensures responsible cooling practices for generations to come.

Challenges Overcome

Staying ahead of industry changes is paramount at Air Rover. In anticipation of the 2025 refrigerant phaseout, our team proactively collaborated with various compressor suppliers. This strategic collaboration has identified the next generation of compressors that will seamlessly integrate with eco-friendly refrigerants, ensuring our continued commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Robert Technologies: Delivering Reliable Solutions

Quarterly Highlights

At Robert Technologies, we're excited to announce the expansion of our product line. We're adding two new commercial lines featuring connectors equivalent to MIL-DTL-5015 and MIL-DTL-26482 standards, along with their accessories. These robust connectors are ideal for demanding applications, like aircraft, requiring superior performance and durability.

Industry and Market Insights

While recognizing a recent downward trend in defense spending, RTI remains optimistic about the future. Our commitment to high-quality products ensures we're well-positioned to serve diverse markets beyond the traditional defense sector. Additionally, we anticipate potential future increases in defense spending to support ongoing global security needs.

Challenges Overcome

RTI prioritizes quality and customer satisfaction. We recently encountered challenges sourcing C19160 Leaded Copper Nickel alloy material, a critical component for our contacts. However, our proactive sourcing team has successfully identified a new supplier, ensuring production continuity and uninterrupted delivery of our products.

Serket: Expanding Our Reach and Delivering Advantage

Quarterly Highlights

Serket is proud to announce an increased focus on the Law Enforcement (LE) market. We actively participated in several key LE-specific trade shows this quarter, including the National Tactical Officers Association conference, strengthening our presence in this rapidly growing segment. LE products don't require Berry Amendment compliance, allowing us to offer a wider range of solutions to this critical sector.

Industry and Market Insights

While acknowledging industry-wide challenges like labor shortages impacting production and material lead times, Serket sees this as an opportunity to solidify our market position. Our strategic focus is on the growing needs of law enforcement, unique first responders, and foreign military clients. Geopolitical instability fuels the demand for near-shore production and sourcing in these sectors. This positioning allows Serket to offer quicker, more predictable, and cost-effective solutions, creating a clear advantage for our clients in these exciting markets.

Challenges Overcome

Similarly to Q2, the industry continues to grapple with domestic production lead times due to labor constraints. Additionally, rising raw material costs and unreliable lead times present challenges to calculating the cost of goods sold. Serket has proactively addressed this by successfully diversifying its customer base. By strategically targeting clients who qualify for TAA-compliant materials and production, Serket has effectively reduced costs and lead times for finished goods, ensuring continued value for all our partners.

Western Design & Fabrication: Boosting Efficiency

Quarterly Highlights

Western Design & Fabrication (WDF) is excited to announce a series of operational improvements boosting efficiency and productivity. We've implemented several enhancements to the manufacturing process for Drip Torch components, leading to faster production and cost reductions. This includes the removal of an old, damaged mezzanine, significantly increasing usable floor space. We've also streamlined inventory management by reorganizing outdated materials and unused assets, maximizing space utilization. Finally, a secure, locked area was created at WDF specifically for inventory control.

Industry and Market Insights

While acknowledging a recent cooling of the market, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, WDF remains optimistic. Conversations with fellow local fabricators and manufacturers confirm this trend extends beyond our business. However, the recent Federal Reserve interest rate cut offers promising signs for increased demand and potential hiring across various industries, which could positively affect our customer base.

Challenges Overcome

WDF embraces challenges as opportunities for growth. Recently, a customer's late-stage requirement change necessitated a different fabrication approach. While initially daunting, this challenge ultimately led to a more cost-effective solution for the parts. Furthermore, it spurred the creative development of a "mobile gantry crane" constructed from unused arches. This versatile tool will be invaluable for future projects within the shop.
